Mellott – Melvin Herman Simms, 62 of Mellott died at 6:45 a.m. today in Lafayette Home Hospital. Mr. Simms was born in the Deers Mill area. He married the former Ruth Shirley who survives. Mr. Simms farmed and operated a service station in the Mellott area.  He is survived by his mother, Mrs. Effie Lighty; two sons, Carl Simms of Crawfordsville and Harold Simms of Waynetown and one daughter, Mrs. Mary Merrill of Crawfordsville.  Also surviving are two brothers, Raymond of Indianapolis and Freeman of Logansport; and three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Coleman of Hillsboro, Mrs. Marie Fugate of Attica and Mrs. Eugene Roland of Colorado.


Source: The obituary is from a collection of newspaper (paper names not recorded) obituaries saved, by Fauniel Hershberger, during the 1950's, 60's, 70's and 80's. She was a life long resident of Fountain County Indiana.  The collection is now housed at Crawfordsville District Public Library.

Survivors include his mother, Mrs. Effie Lighty, two sons, Carl of Crawfordsville, and Harold Dean of Waynetown; one daughter, Mrs. Mary Merrill of Crawfordsville; two brothers, Raymond of Indianapolis and Freeman of Logansport, and three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Coleman of Hillsboro, Mrs. Marie Fugate of Attica and Mrs. Evelyn Roland of Colorado. MELLOTT, Ind. (CNS) – Melvin Herman Simms, 62, of Mellott, died at 6:45 a.m. Saturday (June 19, 1971) at Home Hospital in Lafayette. He had been in the intensive care unit of the hospital since Thursday. Born March 9, 1909, in Deer Mill he was the son of Sherman and Effie Keller Simms. He was a farmer and a service station operator. He was educated in the Hillsboro and Waynetown schools. Survivors include two sons, Carl of Crawfordsville and Harold of Waynetown; a daughter, Mrs. Arthur (Mary) Merrill of Crawfordsville; his mother, Mrs. Effie Lighty of Mellott; two brothers, Raymond of Indianapolis and Freeman of Logansport; three sisters, Mrs. Mamie Coleman of Hillsboro, Mrs. Marie Fugate of Attica and Mrs. Evelyn Roland in Colorado; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his father in 1935 and a brother in infancy. Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Servies-Thomas Funeral Home in Waynetown, with the Rev. Gerald Dooley officiating Burial will be in Waynetown Masonic Cemetery. Friends may call after 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. – jlr
